Cycling in Gran Canaria: the Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves Experience with Daniele Bennati
29.09 - 06.12.26
Why the Pico de las Nieves is a climb worth doing
Gran Canaria isn't just beaches and year-round sunshine. It's also one of European professional cycling's favourite training grounds, thanks to the sheer variety of its terrain: within just a few kilometres you go from coastline to volcanic landscapes that feel like another planet, with temperature and elevation shifting at every switchback.
The Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves takes riders up to the island's highest point, with two routes to choose from:
- 59 km, for those who want the experience of the climb without a full day in the saddle
- 125 km, for those looking to take on the full distance across some of Gran Canaria's most spectacular roads
It's a race open to riders of different levels, but it gives everyone the same feeling: being genuinely up high, with the ocean visible behind you.
The experience with Daniele Bennati: what it really means
There are training camps, and there are experiences designed to be lived, not just completed. This one is the latter.
Four days, one hotel, one goal: arriving at the start line of the Gran Fondo prepared like a professional, with someone by your side who lived that preparation at the highest level of world cycling.
The programme alternates time on the bike with time off it:
- A recon ride on part of the race route together with Daniele, to get a feel for the climb's gradients and rhythm before facing them for real
- A technical pre-race briefing on watt and heart-rate management, plus Daniele's own insight on how to pace the route
- A session with Paolo Alberati (A&G Sporting) on race-day nutrition, supplementation and training
- Race day, lived together, from start to finish line
- A relaxed coffee ride the day after, to close out the experience unhurried
The group stays deliberately small, so every participant genuinely has time to talk with Daniele, not just watch him ride past.
Where you'll stay: Hotel Anfi del Mar
Off the bike, home base is the Hotel Anfi del Mar, right on the ocean, with meals included throughout your stay. The kind of place where, after a day of climbing, all you want is a good bed, a great view, and zero logistics to think about: airport transfers, post-race bike cleaning and group logistics are all already included.
Who this experience is for
You don't need to be a former racer. You need to want to take on a major climb properly prepared, be keen to learn from someone who rode the roads professionally, and appreciate an experience organised down to the smallest detail. It's a good fit for:
- Amateur cyclists looking for an unusual end-of-season goal
- Anyone who loves small-group cycling trips with almost tailor-made attention to detail
- Anyone looking for a different kind of gift, for themselves or a cycling-loving friend
When to go and how to get there
The event takes place in late November, when Gran Canaria still offers mild temperatures along the coast, perfect for training, while up at altitude, toward the Pico de las Nieves, the air is already noticeably crisper, a reminder of just how high you're climbing.
